Regulation of Pregnancy Termination

HB 6205 requires that all abortion in Illinois be performed according to accepted standards of medical practice.  Abortions would be prohibited after a fetus is viable except in cases when it is necessary to save the life or health of the woman.  Information about each abortion performed in Illinois must be reported to the Illinois Department of Public Health as long as this information preserves the anonymity of the patient.

  • Fact: The RHAA does regulate abortions and protects women’s health and safety by making sure only qualified medical professionals perform abortions according to accepted medical standards.
  • Fact: Under the RHAA, only physicians would be allowed to perform surgical abortions.
  • Fact: Viability means that state of fetal development when a fetus can survive outside the uterus with or without extraordinary medical procedures.
  • Fact: Current Illinois law already prohibits abortions after viability except to protect a woman’s life or health.
  • Fact: Current Illinois law already requires the reporting of abortion data to the Department of Public Health as long as that information protects the patients’ anonymity.
